The bench further stated that India’s linguistic divisions are sensitive and a public figure like Haasan should be more responsible in his statements, especially when they have the potential to incite unrest and disharmony.
Controversy Over Tamil-Kannada Remark Escalates
The controversy began when Haasan, speaking at an event in Chennai, said “Kannada was born out of Tamil.” The remark was swiftly condemned by leaders in Karnataka, who demanded an unconditional apology. However, the actor stood firm, stating:
“If I am wrong, I will apologise. If I am not, then I won’t.”
Haasan’s refusal to apologise led the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce to issue a warning, threatening to block the release of his film “Thug Life” in the state.
HC Highlights Responsibility of Public Figures
The High Court remarked that instead of seeking legal protection now, Haasan should have considered the public’s sentiments from the outset:
“People of Karnataka only asked for an apology. Now you come here seeking protection. What has happened because of it? Unrest. Disharmony.”
The case has now become a flashpoint in an already sensitive linguistic landscape, with many observers noting that the controversy could affect Haasan’s political standing and film prospects in the state.
