Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar responded to the incident, expressing regret over the lack of control at the venue.

What was meant to be a moment of celebration quickly turned tragic as a stampede-like situation erupted near Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebrations. Several people were injured, and many are feared dead, with distressing visuals flooding social media.. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar responded to the incident, expressing regret over the lack of control at the venue.

“This is not a controllable crowd. I apologise to all the people of Bengaluru and Karnataka. We wanted to organize a peaceful procession, but the crowd was overwhelming,” Shivakumar told news agency PTI.

He further added that over 5,000 police personnel had been deployed, but managing a “young, vibrant crowd” without using force was a major challenge. “We can’t use lathis on young fans,” he said, declining to confirm exact casualty figures at the time.

Visuals from the location showed fans gasping for air, people fainting, and police struggling to manage the rapidly swelling crowd. Among the most heartbreaking images was that of a young child collapsing, prompting immediate police response as officers rushed the injured to hospitals.

The incident occurred during a felicitation event organized by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to honor RCB’s historic win. While no official death toll has been released, emergency services were on high alert and several injured fans were taken to Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.

The celebrations followed RCB’s nail-biting six-run win over Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final held in Ahmedabad. The victory marked RCB’s first-ever IPL title in 18 years and was a career milestone for Virat Kohli, the team’s icon since the league’s inception in 2008.

Despite the monumental achievement, the lack of crowd control has raised serious questions about planning and public safety during high-attendance events.
