Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025 – In the wake of the tragic Air India plane crash that shook the nation, Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Ahmedabad plane crash site to take stock of the situation and review the ongoing rescue and relief efforts. The incident, which occurred shortly after takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, has resulted in hundreds of casualties, making it one of the most devastating air disasters in India.

Amit Shah visits Ahmedabad Plane Crash Site accompanied by top government officials including Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, MoS Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, and Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi.

The high-level delegation inspected the crash site where the Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff with 242 passengers onboard.

Following the inspection, Amit Shah visits Ahmedabad Plane Crash Site as well as visited Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where he met with injured victims and their families. He assured them that the central government would provide full support for medical treatment, compensation, and rehabilitation. The presence of senior ministers at the hospital highlighted the gravity of the situation and the government’s commitment to supporting those affected.

Rescue Operations Ongoing, Black Box Retrieved

Rescue teams, including NDRF, SDRF, and local fire brigades, are continuing efforts to recover remains and locate black box data. Officials confirmed that the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder (black box) of the aircraft have been recovered and will be examined by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).

The aircraft, reportedly struggling to gain altitude, crashed just minutes after takeoff, leading to a massive explosion that engulfed parts of a nearby hostel. Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames and black smoke rising from the crash site, which posed significant challenges for initial rescue operations.

Government Assures Full Transparency and Support

Amit Shah visits Ahmedabad Plane Crash Site and in a public statement, Amit Shah said, “It is a heart-wrenching tragedy. I have personally visited the Ahmedabad plane crash site and spoken to officials to ensure that rescue and investigation are being handled with utmost priority. The government is committed to providing all possible support to the victims and their families.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been briefed on the situation. He held discussions with both Amit Shah and the Civil Aviation Ministry and has directed them to ensure transparency and expedite the investigation into the cause of the crash.

Victims and Global Response

According to police officials, the crash claimed the lives of all 242 people on board, including 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, and 1 Canadian national. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also reportedly among the victims. Authorities confirmed that the final list of deceased passengers will be released after identification procedures are complete.

Condolences have poured in from across the globe. Governments of the UK, Portugal, and Canada have also extended support and expressed grief over the loss of their citizens.

Air India’s Response

Air India, in its official statement, acknowledged the incident and expressed deep sorrow. “Flight AI171 operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident. We are coordinating with authorities and will provide regular updates,” the statement read. A dedicated helpline (1800 5691 444) has also been activated for families of the passengers.
