Rescue Operations Ongoing, Black Box Retrieved
Rescue teams, including NDRF, SDRF, and local fire brigades, are continuing efforts to recover remains and locate black box data. Officials confirmed that the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder (black box) of the aircraft have been recovered and will be examined by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB).
The aircraft, reportedly struggling to gain altitude, crashed just minutes after takeoff, leading to a massive explosion that engulfed parts of a nearby hostel. Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames and black smoke rising from the crash site, which posed significant challenges for initial rescue operations.

According to police officials, the crash claimed the lives of all 242 people on board, including 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese citizens, and 1 Canadian national. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also reportedly among the victims. Authorities confirmed that the final list of deceased passengers will be released after identification procedures are complete.
Condolences have poured in from across the globe. Governments of the UK, Portugal, and Canada have also extended support and expressed grief over the loss of their citizens.
Air India’s Response
Air India, in its official statement, acknowledged the incident and expressed deep sorrow. “Flight AI171 operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident. We are coordinating with authorities and will provide regular updates,” the statement read. A dedicated helpline (1800 5691 444) has also been activated for families of the passengers.
