IIT Delhi Tragedy: Second-Year Student Found Dead in Hostel Room, Investigation Underway

New Delhi, June 4, 2025: A second-year undergraduate student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi was found dead in his hostel room on Wednesday. The student, enrolled in the biomechanical engineering program in IIT Delhi, was reportedly unresponsive for over 24 hours before being discovered.

According to a statement from Delhi Police, a PCR call was received at Kishangarh Police Station alerting them about a student who had not opened his hostel room door for an unusually long time. Responding immediately, the Station House Officer (SHO) and team rushed to the campus.
As the door was locked from the inside and the student was not responding, fire department officials were summoned to forcibly open the room. Inside, the male student was found unconscious on the bed. Medical staff from IIT Delhi arrived promptly but declared the student dead at the scene.
Student Last Seen on June 2, Peers Raised Alarm
Preliminary investigations reveal that the student was last seen on the evening of June 2 after having dinner. When he did not make any contact or was seen the following day, fellow hostel residents grew concerned. They informed hostel authorities, who then alerted campus security and the police.
Delhi Police noted that there were no visible signs of injury on the student’s body. However, vomit was discovered on the floor, indicating the possibility of a medical emergency. To ensure a thorough examination, the Crime Team and Forensic Unit were called in to inspect the room and collect evidence.
Postmortem to Ascertain Cause of Death
The student’s body has been sent to Safdarjung Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities have initiated a detailed inquiry and are speaking to classmates and hostel staff as part of the investigation.
